Coffee Table Books for Cruise Lovers

Books to Enjoy for Years to Come

By Linda Garrison, About.com

Most cruise travelers love to read about cruising and traveling. They also love to look at pictures of cruise ships and ports of call. Here are some great books to use as reference materials and as conversation starters. They also make great gifts for the cruiser who has everything.

1. Titanic at Two a.m.

Attractive, riveting book on the last minutes of the Titanic. Beautifully illustrated. Paul J. Quinn has pulled together many of the survivor's testimonies and compiled them into this account of the tragedy. Nice size for display on a coffee table.

2. Dusk to Dawn

Paul J. Quinn's second book on the Titanic focuses more on the last hours of the Titanic. The story starts at dinner and details the activities of the ship and its crew on that fateful night.

3. Travel Photography: A Guide to Taking Better Pictures

Author has been supplying pictures to the Lonely Planet series of guidebooks for over 10 years. He shares some of his secrets in this book, which is full of unforgettable travel photographs. The book is broken down into four useful parts – First Things First, Taking Control, On the Road and Back at Home. Great resource and conversation piece for travelers.

4. In Response to Place: Photographs from the Nature's Conservancy

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Nature's Conservancy, the Conservancy asked several famous photographers to choose one of the Conservancy's 200+ flagship conservation sites and then to shoot pictures of the site. This book is the result of this project.

5. Fodor's Kodak Travel Pictures

Tips for beginner photographers should help make your cruise photos look better than ever. The guide is broken down by circumstance or topic, and is thin enough to be carried into the field.

6. The Best American Travel Writing 2001

Not exactly a "coffee table book", but book is a 400-page far flung collection of travel articles and stories.  Editor has done a good job of selecting a diverse group of articles that will appeal to those of us who love to travel and read about it.

7. Great Cruise Ships and Ocean Liners from 1954 to 1986

Wonderful pictorial record of the cruise industry with over 170 photos. Mr. Miller's photos can help you distinguish the ships by their look, speed, and comfort. This era was certainly the beginning of the cruise ship revolution we have seen in the last decade.

8. Modern Cruise Ships, 1965 - 1990: A Photographic Record

Comprehensive text and photo journal with 184 illustrations of over 100 ships. Good gift for the cruise enthusiast. Book starts with the beginning of the cruise ship era and continues up to right before the boon of the new ships of the last decade.

9. Monarchs of the Sea: The Great Ocean Liners

Big, beautiful book that documents the history of the ocean liner. Goes from the Mayflower to the Queen Elizabeth II. Wonderful photographs, history, and cutaways of the ships. Full of interesting facts, figures, and personal accounts.

10. Pictorial History of Ocean Liners, 1860-1993. 417 Photographs

Pictures and descriptions of all ships over 16,000 tons from the Great Eastern (1860) to the Grand Princess (1997.) Good basic reference material on ship builder, tonnage, length, beam, speed, and passenger capacity.
